Mobile malware attacks are growing at an exponential rate- mobile malware can be installed on a device remotely by an adversary unknown to the user, or it can be installed by the user himself in order to pirate media. Either way, it leads to economic losses, and FatSkunk is offering a tiny piece of embedded client software that will become the next big platform for preventing fraud based revenue leakage on mobiles.

The FatSkunk product employs a novel approach that uses principles of physics to detect malware, not heuristics or signatures. Our product can take just milliseconds to dynamically scan devices for infection – whether these devices are e-readers, phones, game consoles, tablets, settop boxes, voting machines, cash registers, vehicular infotainment systems, nuclear warheads… you name it, we can check if is is infected or not. We currently have a beta product demonstrable on Android, but our product is operating system agnostic.

Our scan can be invoked whenever appropriate. Whenever a device boots up, as it is charged, or as it issues a sensitive request. An external verifier dynamically determines if the scanned device is infected or not, and it is not possible for an infected device to act as if it is not infected if it is infected.

Our technology does not prevent infection, it only detects it, and then characterizes it. But it does not detect it “with some decent probability” like traditional approaches do-rather, it dynamically detects any and all active and unwanted programs that do not erase themselves to remain unnoticed – guaranteed; whether they have been seen in the wild before, or not. Whether they are rootkits or not. And whether they have attempted to infect our detection algorithm or not. After detection, a threat can be scrubbed from the phone using walled garden techniques and we can re-scan to verify success. If a threat is passive, we can scrub it from our cloud.
