The traditional Anti-Virus (AV) paradigm is poorly suited for use on mobile platforms due to the battery power limitations mobile devices suffer. Even using cloud computing approaches to minimize client computation, significant client presence is needed to get a reliable defense. This has not posed a real threat to date, given the relative lack of mobile malware in circulation. However, it is believed that this will soon change, as mobile platforms are expected to surpass traditional computers in numbers within 2-3 years, and as handsets increasingly become used for payments. Both of these trends will cause organized crime to target phones with malware. Without a new paradigm to address mobile malware, many experts believe that e-commerce fraud may spiral out of control.
